A sacred hill in Buddo where Buganda’s kings are crowned, and a key landmark in the kingdom’s origin story.
What is Naggalabi?
Naggalabi is the traditional coronation site of the kings of Buganda. Located in Buddo, it is one of the most sacred places in the kingdom’s history and culture. Every Kabaka ascends to the throne through elaborate rituals performed at this hill, making it a symbol of political legitimacy and ancestral continuity.
Historical Significance
Naggalabi is deeply connected to the founding of Buganda. According to oral tradition, this is the site where Kintu defeated the tyrant Bemba and united the clans of Muwawa. That victory laid the foundation for the Buganda Kingdom—transforming Muwawa into Buganda and establishing Kintu as the first Kabaka.
Because of this foundational event, Naggalabi became the chosen place for the installation of all kings of Buganda. Each coronation reenacts elements of Kintu’s triumph and the unity of the founding clans.
Cultural Role
Naggalabi serves not only as a political site but also as a cultural and spiritual center. It is where:
- the Kabaka undergoes sacred rites of purification
- the clans reaffirm their unity and loyalty
- ancestral spirits are invoked to bless the new reign
- symbolic reenactments of Kintu’s victory over Bemba take place
These customs strengthen the identity of Buganda and ensure that each new king is rooted in the kingdom’s ancient traditions.
Location
Naggalabi is situated in Buddo, on a hill that holds cultural, political, and spiritual importance. Entire sections of the coronation grounds have been preserved and maintained for centuries.
Why Naggalabi Matters Today
Naggalabi continues to function as the heart of Buganda’s kingship. Modern coronation ceremonies blend ancient ritual with modern statecraft, drawing thousands of people and international visitors.
Understanding Naggalabi gives insight into:
- Buganda’s political evolution
